Project Overview

The Music Industry Essentials program is an online, video-based certificate course developed in collaboration with the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU Tisch, Billboard Magazine, and leading voices across the music industry. Designed to introduce students to the vast ecosystem of music careers and provide actionable guidance for success, the course offers a Certificate of Completion from NYU and is geared toward aspiring professionals interested in the creative, technical, and business sides of the industry. View the course overview page.

The program includes six comprehensive modules, each featuring 3–5 hours of video instruction, delivered through short, engaging lessons and interactive knowledge-check quizzes. Students explore a wide range of music career paths—from performing and producing to managing, marketing, and more—while learning from renowned NYU faculty, industry experts, and Grammy-winning professionals. The curriculum is designed to be self-paced and skill-building, providing students with both the knowledge and terminology they need to break into or advance within the music industry.

Process

As a Producer and Learning Experience Designer, I collaborated closely with NYU faculty from the Clive Davis Institute, along with Billboard editors, top artists, producers, and music executives to design and develop this in-depth curriculum. I was responsible for leading both the instructional design strategy and the immersive production components of the course.
A key innovation in this project was the development of interactive, 360-degree VR studio tours—an experiential layer designed to give students a first-person view inside more than 10 recording studios. These ranged from cutting-edge modern facilities to iconic vintage spaces, including the Beastie Boys’ Oscilloscope Labs. My role involved shooting and designing these VR-based explorations, helping learners become familiar with studio gear such as mixing consoles, playback systems, speaker arrays, and recording tools.

To deepen the educational value, I collaborated with Grammy Award-winning engineers, including Bob Power and Matt Marinelli (Beastie Boys engineer), who guided students through the technical and practical use of advanced studio equipment using 360-degree walkthroughs. The immersive component was also made accessible via PC and mobile devices, allowing students to explore studios virtually, compare environments, and build fluency in music production terminology.

Project Outcome

The Music Industry Essentials certificate program has become a popular and respected entry point for aspiring music professionals, enabling students from around the world to learn from top-tier educators and industry veterans. The combination of video-based instruction and VR-enhanced experiential learning provides students with a well-rounded, real-world understanding of music careers and studio environments.
This project allowed me to leverage my dual expertise in instructional design and media production to create an engaging, accessible program rooted in industry relevance. The success of the immersive components demonstrated the power of VR and 360-degree video in education, especially for career-based learning. It remains a standout example of how thoughtful course design and emerging technology can bridge the gap between education and industry, preparing students to step confidently into professional creative roles.
